Antique Victorian Sterling Silver Bowl 1900

This is antique Victorian sterling silver bowl hallmarked for London 1900 with rams head decoration to the sides and on one side a head which is possibly George lV and on the other side a female head which is possibly Caroline of Brunswick. On each end is a royal crown above a heraldic design. On the bottom is the crowned R mark for Neresheimer & Sohne who were the preeminent German makers of top quality silver items. Based in Hanau, Neresheimer made fine copies of important silver items, often with a royal theme, and these items were exported all over the world.

When imported into England the items were given the standard English hallmark, plus the stamp of the importer Singleton, Benda & Co Ltd. The bowl has the fleur de lis pattern in many places, and around the shaped base there are floral swags and a repeat of the fleur de lis and the heraldic design. It measures 4 3/4" (12 cms) x 4" (10 cms) and stands 3 (7.5 cms) high. It weighs 177 grams / 5.7 troy oz and has a gilded interior - all in excellent condition.
